7 Fun Matcha Facts You Probably Didn’t Know (But Will Love)

Matcha has become a modern wellness staple — the morning ritual that promises calm energy, vibrant green goodness, and a moment of presence in an overstimulated world. But behind the silky whisked lattes and beautiful green bowls is a rich, fascinating history that most people never hear about.

Today, I’m sharing 7 fun, surprising matcha facts — a mix of ancient tradition, modern nutrition, and a little SANRAE magic — to deepen your appreciation for this beautiful daily ritual.

1. One cup = the power of 10 cups of green tea

Because matcha involves whisking and drinking the whole leaf, it contains far more antioxidants than regular steeped tea — up to 10 times more.
Think of it as the concentrated, supercharged version of green tea.

This is why so many people feel the shift in their energy, clarity, and mood almost immediately.

2. Matcha was originally used by monks for meditation

Long before matcha took over Instagram, it was cherished by Zen monks as a tool for deep, sustained focus. They drank matcha before long hours of meditation because it created a state of calm alertness: awake, present, centred.

It truly is the original brain drink.

3. Matcha’s green colour isn’t just pretty — it’s science

Ceremonial matcha is shade-grown for approximately three weeks before harvest.
This intentional shading increases chlorophyll production and enhances the amino acid profile, giving matcha its deep emerald colour and naturally sweet, umami flavour.

If matcha is dull, brownish, or yellowish, it’s a sign that it wasn’t grown or processed the traditional way.

4. Matcha was once used as a form of currency

This one always surprises people.

During the 12th–16th centuries in Japan, premium matcha was so valuable that samurai families used it as currency, status, and even gifts of honour. Matcha bricks were collected, traded, and treasured like rare art.

Imagine paying for something with tea!

5. Stone-milling matcha is incredibly slow — on purpose

Authentic matcha is ground using slow-turning granite mills, designed to protect the flavour and nutrients from heat.

But here’s the wild part:
Each stone mill produces just 30–40 grams per hour — basically one tin of matcha.

This is why true ceremonial matcha is always fine, silky, and naturally premium.

6. SANRAE matcha is grown at the foot of Mount Fuji

A little SANRAE pride moment.

Our ceremonial matcha comes from small family farms nestled at the base of Mount Fuji — an area known for its mineral-rich volcanic soil.
This unique terrain nourishes the tea leaves, giving SANRAE matcha its smooth taste, vibrant glow, and elevated nutrient density.

It’s a ritual rooted in nature, tradition, and deep craftsmanship.

7. Matcha gives smoother energy than coffee

Thanks to its natural pairing of caffeine + L-theanine, matcha delivers a steady, smooth lift without jitters, spikes, or crashes.

It’s the perfect daily ritual for anyone wanting:

  • calmer focus
  • balanced energy
  • fewer highs and lows
  • a more mindful start to the day

It’s no wonder so many coffee lovers keep matcha in their routine.

A Ritual Worth Sipping

Whether you whisk matcha to start your day, support your mood, create calmness, or simply indulge in a beautiful daily moment — there’s so much more behind each cup than meets the eye.

Matcha is history, tradition, craftsmanship, science, and nourishment all in one vibrant bowl.
