The 4pm Slump: What Your Body Might Actually Need

You know the feeling.

It's 4pm. Your concentration has disappeared, your energy is fading, and suddenly you're wondering whether you need another coffee, something sweet, or simply to call it a day.

Sound familiar?

The afternoon slump is something many of us experience, especially when we're juggling work, movement, stress and everything in between.

But while it's tempting to reach for a quick pick-me-up, that dip in energy might be your body's way of asking for something a little more supportive.

Here's what could be behind it, and a few simple ways to feel more energised throughout your day.

1. You might not be eating enough

Between busy mornings, back-to-back meetings and endless to-do lists, it's surprisingly easy to reach mid-afternoon having barely eaten.

Maybe breakfast was just a coffee. Maybe lunch was rushed. Or perhaps you've been unintentionally saving your appetite for dinner.

Your body needs consistent nourishment to keep you going.

Try this: Build meals around a combination of protein, fibre-rich carbohydrates and healthy fats. Think eggs on wholegrain toast, a nourishing grain bowl, or yoghurt with fruit and seeds.

And don't underestimate the power of a proper lunch.

2. Your blood sugar might need a little more stability

Ever noticed how a sweet snack gives you a quick lift, only to leave you feeling hungry again shortly afterwards?

What and when we eat can influence our blood glucose levels, which in turn can affect how steady our energy feels.

Protein, fibre and healthy fats help slow digestion and can support a more gradual rise in blood sugar after eating.

Try this: Instead of reaching for something sweet on its own, pair it with protein or fibre.

An apple with nut butter, Greek yoghurt with berries, or a smoothie made with The Daily Calm Protein can make a satisfying afternoon snack.

With 21g of plant-based protein per serving, Calm Protein is an easy way to add more nourishment to your day, especially when time is limited.

3. You might simply need to hydrate

It's easy to get through an entire morning on coffee and forget about water.

Even mild dehydration can contribute to tiredness, headaches and difficulty concentrating.

And as we move into warmer weather, fluid needs can increase, particularly when we're spending more time outdoors or sweating during exercise.

Try this: Before automatically reaching for another coffee, have a glass of water and check in with how you're feeling.

On particularly hot days or after sweaty workouts, The Daily Hydraete™ can help replenish electrolytes lost through sweat, with sodium, potassium and magnesium to support fluid balance and normal muscle and nervous system function.

Sometimes, the simplest rituals are the easiest to overlook.

4. Your nervous system might need a moment

Not every afternoon energy dip is about food.

Stress, mental fatigue and hours spent concentrating can leave you feeling completely drained, even when you've barely moved from your desk.

And while another coffee might sound appealing, more caffeine isn't always the answer, especially later in the day when it can interfere with sleep.

Try this: Step away from your screen for ten minutes.

Get outside. Take a short walk. Stretch. Breathe.

If you enjoy matcha, a small SANRAE Ceremonial Matcha earlier in the afternoon can be a lovely alternative to another coffee.

Matcha naturally contains caffeine alongside L-theanine, an amino acid studied for its potential role in attention and relaxation.

But remember, even matcha contains caffeine, so timing matters if you're sensitive to it.

5. Your sleep might be catching up with you

There's also a natural dip in alertness during the afternoon, linked to our body's circadian rhythm.

It's normal to feel a little less switched on at certain points in the day.

But when you're consistently underslept, stressed or overcommitted, that natural dip can feel much more pronounced.

Try this: Rather than relying on stimulants to push through, look at the bigger picture.

Are you getting enough sleep? Eating regularly? Taking breaks? Giving yourself time to recover?

Sometimes, the most supportive thing you can do for tomorrow's energy is to prioritise tonight's rest.

Your afternoon reset, the SANRAE way

You don't need an elaborate routine to feel a little more like yourself again.

Next time 4pm rolls around, try this:

  • Hydrate: Start with a glass of water.

  • Nourish: Reach for a protein-rich snack if you're hungry.

  • Move: Take a short walk or step outside for fresh air.

  • Reset: Give your mind a few minutes away from your screen.

  • Rest: Protect your sleep rather than pushing through exhaustion every evening.

And remember, if persistent fatigue is affecting your everyday life, it's worth speaking to a healthcare professional to explore possible underlying causes.

A little reminder

Not every dip in energy needs to be fixed with more caffeine, another supplement or a stricter routine.

Sometimes your body needs food.

Sometimes it needs water.

Sometimes it needs movement.

And sometimes it simply needs a break.

Wellness isn't about feeling energised every minute of every day. It's about learning to recognise what your body needs and finding small, sustainable ways to support it.

Because feeling good shouldn't require running on empty.

Nourish your way, SANRAE™.
